Making science a tool for the triumph of reason in public policy.
Trustee, Governing Body Fellow and
Audit Committee Member, Lucy Cavendish College
Regents House Fellow, University of Cambridge
Lucy Cavendish College was founded in 1965, and incorporated by Royal Charter as a College in the University of Cambridge in 1997. The College is an autonomous, self-governing community of scholars and one of the 31 colleges within the University of Cambridge. The College is a British registered charity (number 1137875) regulated by the Charity Commission. The College in conjunction with the University provides an education of the highest quality. Lucy Cavendish's mission is to ensure that the best candidates from the country, regardless of background recieve a world leading education. I was elected a Fellow during Easter Term 2022 and was admitted to the fellowship at Governing Body in October 2022, and appointed as a Trustee soon after, a role I served until I was appointed the Lindemann Fellowship at MIT in April 2024. As a trustee I was reponsible for ensuring that the College satisfied its educational mission and properly stewarded its endowment (approx ~£60 million). I additionally served Hounslow Fellowship Panel in 2023, selecting and interview candidates for the Hounslow Research Fellowship, one of the most prestigious academic award and positions given by the University. I also served on the Audit committee, overseeing the governance of Lucy Cavendish College. I was also Director of Studies for the Physics community at the college and taught quantum computing and condensed matter physics.
Education Select Committee, House of Commons, Parliament
United Kingdom Research Council Grant for Public Policy
The House of Commons is the de facto primary chamber of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. My role within the Education Select Committee was to aid members in their scrutiny of the work of the Department for Education, covering children’s social care, schools and higher education. Of particular note, I generated the brief for the Secretary of State accountability session in a time of heightened political tensions arising from exam grading. I worked to brief the committee on issues like prisoner education, free school meals and special educational needs. I curated evidence and liaised with the witnesses themselves, for example holding accountability sessions with Ofqual, Ofsted and the Children’s Commissioner. From time to time, I was seconded to the Speaker's Office, operating in the chamber itself advising the Speaker on procedural matters.
Caithness International Science Festival, Scotland
I am immensely proud to be part of the organising committee of the Caithness International Science Festival. The science festival targets children and young adults who are otherwise exposed to very little science education and targets one of most deprived places in the United Kingdom.
